On Thursday, three days after her disappearance, the body of 7 year old Somer Thompson was found in a South Georgia landfill.
On Monday, Somer became separated from her siblings and schoolmates on her way home from school in Orange Park Florida, some 55 miles north of where her body was eventually found.
Her 10-year-old sister had reported to police that Somer had been involved in a fight with another girl and that Somer had ran off from her sister and brother because she was upset. The sister then told police that she lost sight of Somer in a group of children that where leaving the school.
The landfill where her body was found is near Folkston, Georgia, 55 miles north of where the girl became separated from her schoolmates. Police in Georgia continue combing through the landfill and have removed some possible evidence, while investigators in Florida have concluded their investigation of a vacant house near where Somer was last seen.
Police have determined the cause of death, but have declined to share this information with the public to protect the integrity of the investigation. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Mary Justino said in a press conference on Friday that over a thousand tips have poured in and there are investigators and agents following up on the roughly 200 tips that remain active.
Somer’s family was making funeral arrangements Friday, and many in the community had offered to help financially. “There has been an outpouring of support from the community,” Justino said.
In a press conference outside her home in Florida, Somer’s mother Diena Thompson, sent out a warning to her daughter’s killer. “I want you to know that I will not sleep until this person is found. I hope they get you, and I hope they make you pay for a long, long time.”
Rewards totaling $30,000 have been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for this tragedy.
